Autumn in Austria is a season full of cozy traditions, and two seasonal treats stand out: Sturm and Maroni. These delights bring warmth, sweetness, and nostalgia to crisp autumn days.
What is Sturm?
Sturm is young, partially fermented grape juice—essentially the first taste of the new wine season. It’s lightly fizzy, sweet, and best enjoyed in small glasses with friends or family. Traditionally, Austrians enjoy it during Heurigen visits (wine taverns) in September and October, often accompanied by simple, hearty snacks.

Maroni – The Chestnuts of Autumn

Roasted chestnuts, or Maroni, are another autumn staple. You’ll often find them sold from street carts in Vienna and other cities, their warm, nutty aroma filling the streets. They’re perfect as a snack on the go or as an ingredient in cozy autumn recipes like soups or desserts.
Bringing the taste to the UK
While Austria is the home of these autumn classics, you can enjoy them in the UK too:
- Sturm (or Young Wine): Many Austrian or German wine shops carry seasonal wines in autumn that mimic the sweet, fizzy taste of Sturm. Look for young white wines or grape must in stores like Waitrose or specialty European shops. Some online retailers also offer Austrian Sturm imports.
- Maroni: Roasted chestnuts are seasonal in UK markets from late September to November. Farmers’ markets, local Christmas markets, or specialty stores often sell them fresh. If you can’t find them fresh, look for vacuum-packed roasted chestnuts in European delis.
A Cozy Autumn Experience
For the perfect autumn afternoon, pour a glass of young wine, roast some Maroni at home or buy them freshly roasted, and enjoy a little Austrian seasonal magic. It’s a tradition that’s easy to bring across borders—and a delicious way to celebrate the flavours of fall.
